Weatherstrip

I need to replace the weatherstrip on my 82 280zx, how much am I looking at? And who does that kind of work (e.g. Body shop, window place, etc.)?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide...
Marlon

Weatherstrip like the chrome trim or the rubber window seals? You can get trim from the same place you get all Z parts: Nissan, MSA, BDA, etc (we have a huge "WHERE TO GET PARTS" list in the Gen Tech area).

And you can install all trim and weatherstripping yourself with a set of screwdrivers and urethane sealer.

the rubber seal

It has been 5 months that i have strickly been looking for the rubber glass seal for the rear and is completly impossible to find. my car is at the body shop fully painted finaly but no one from here to china has this rubber seal i have found it for the 1980-83 2+2 (idk if this will fit they said no on the phone) and i found it for the 78 but i cant find it for the coupe. Does anyone know if the 2+2 glass is the same as the coupe if it is i know i place that sells it. other than that is impossible to find. The glass guy says he can seal it with just glass sealer and im sure it wont leak but will in time just come off cuz hell is just a sealer idk! good luck finding it if you do hit me up i need it too

2seater & 2+2 hatch glass are different sizes.

Your local Nissan dealer can't source one for you?

yup

i have spoken to my dealer many times they say they cant even outsource it. and i have been writing emails between Zcar source they said that hatchaback they have on site is for the 2+2 only (New Nissan 280ZX Hatch Glass Weatherstrip for the 1979-83 Datsun/Nissan 280ZX 2+2.) kind of missleading they put hatch glass in there lol. same for that other store. i have written emails to every source i could find. nothing.

i talked to thad ziegler glass once here in SAn antonio about my hatch glass and they said if ur weather strip is no good we can just use the half of the strip on the inside and urathane it to the hatch and seal the outside, and make it look clean.. for like 129. and i believe i was just talking to a front desk lady who happen to know that lol.. id imagine its extra if u want them to use new strip
maybe its a common practice
its an option ....

^^^ Take a close look at your hatch glass gasket... The glass is literally pressure fitted into the gasket & hatch. When I was doing body work on my car, I was able to get the glass out, but could not get it back in, so I had a glass shop reinstall it for me. I sat there and watched him and he even had a fun time. You absolutely do not want to "urethane" in the hatch glass... unless you want it to fall in on you and shatter all over the interior.

idk about all that but .some foos from the junk yard came out to my house and i had them replace both hatck glass in my z's just cuz i wanted the rear glass defogger and one with louver mounts. they used some string and a screw driver even ripped one of the seals 3 yrs later glass is in there and no leaks. 2o bucks a pop
and i bought a 280zxt once with the hatch glass not even fully installed it was kept on by blue tape never fell in or flew off all the way home from houston and a few days after that..
idk what keeps em in or how to install and dont care ima motor man not a body artist but consider all possoblilities

Blue tape what the installers put on it once installed (ever had a windshield done?). I doubt it's just blue masking tape that's holding the glass to the car...

Well for my car when we stripped down the rear hatch we found out that who ever had the car before me had cut the rubber seal around the glass in half and then home made glued it back with silicone etc. SO i cant really put the old seal back on its cut exactly in half all around. This is why im in need to find another one. that dude that said that might get it for me from japan is still looking. bla!

Have you tried to source another 2seater hatch from a junk yard? I think there is a coupe in my local Pick N Pull... Maybe I'll stop by this week and check for ya (give the window a good smasheroo and take the seal if no one has yet).

I have been to every junk yard here but as i found out miami florida has 0 of these cars i bought this car in a junk yard back when i lived in california a year ago and saw a million of these so it was easy to get parts. down here this car is soooo rare. if you find the seal in ok condition i would soo pay you for it and your time and effort. i have been months on this dang seal. the glass guy wants to just glue it with that puddy they use and im like NO. yeah it wont leak but first time i take it in the express way i bet you it will fly off and kill everyone behind me lol.

If only someone in the Z community could get their hands on one of the molds for this, and make them.

I just checked because sometimes we can get stuff in Canada that is NLA in the USA, etc. Nadda on the weather strip for the rear hatch. It's the begining of what happens with all Datsuns... stuff starts to become unavailable. We're lucky there are so many parts cars around..... for now....

Did you find a used one you can use?
