So when the clutch is out, it makes the noise, but when you push in the clutch pedal it goes away? Sounds like your throw out bearing.

Yeah, I agree with NismoPick. It does sound like your throwout bearing. Been there done that.

Yeah, I'd say it's the throwout bearing. Good times!

thats easy as pie, unless its like my problem and you blew a tranny bearing, but then you would hear a clunking to from the shaft wobling.

Yeah good idea kid. I made the mistake of not putting a new clutch, when I was getting my '82 ready for the road. Wont make that mistake again. Good luck to you man. To me it is tedious, because of all the crap you have to remove to get to it. Very time consuming. But all in all, a good learning experience.

ahh trannys. you got to love em.

I got lucky. I put a old clutch in when I did my tranny swap, 30K miles down the road and still pullin hard. Removin the tranny is easy. It's those top two bolts I hate. I'd replace the slave while your there. Maby even the line if it looks rough. Like hoov said. "It's the crap you do while your at it"

Throw out bearing.. but i got a question for every one else about clutch slipedge ? when im driving my 82 280zxt in 1st to second to third gear the rpm meter peaks with just a touch of gas.. meens my clutch is sliping right ? in time for a new clutch.. its a stock clutch from nissan its been on my car for 9 years and only put about 30,000 miles on it.. should i get another stock clutch ? or get a stage 1 or stage 2 clutch kit ?

Seems to me most high performance aftermarket clutches don't last nearly as long as factory clutches, at least with a stock engine. I wouldn't go more than a stage 1 on a daily driver, maybe even just use a stock disk, with a stage 1 pressure plate.

3' or 4' socket extension makes it a breeze...

or a ratcheting wrench. dot put a aftermarket throw out in it thu. they dont last as long as the clutch. nissan only for those things. trust me and while your at it, replace the guide bushing in the end of the crank with the needle bearing unit.

just use a normal wrench, those top 2 bolts are easy as well. and whats with "stage" crap. that means nothing to me. use real car terms such as how many pounds the pressure plate is, the disc make up, disc or puck.... etc.

i hate stage's.

Is this the blue turbo you did the reverse to first burn out? Stock clutches don't like tons of hard abuse.

first of all, isn't it that the throwout bearing pushes on the clutch pressure plate only when you push the pedal down.

I thought Kid was saying the grinding was when the pedal was up (when all the gears inside the tranny are spinning)

Seems like the gears in the front half of the transmission are bad, or the main input shaft is going out.

But, since the grinding is gone its all good

Hum... big mechanical problems don't just come and go by themselves. Not much you can do. Either rip into it, or wait till it starts making the noise again. Make a vid if it does come back.
