side mirrors
side mirrors
alright i am painting my side mirrors and yesterday i did the passenger one, no probs but today i pulled off the driver side thinkin its the same but its not.
the passenger housing was in 2 parts, the base was metal and the cone arround the front of the mirror was plastic, the driver side is all one part for the housing.
is this normal or was something swapped later on down the road after this car left the lot.
its a 79 with dual power mirrors, basicly the car has/had all the goodies except for the annoying ones (t-tops, auto climate, ect)

Does one of the mirrors have the "defogger" element? If so, they weren't available until '81 or '82 so it's probably a replacement. Was there any bondo or apparent damage to the door where the mirror was mounted? It could be a complete replacement door.
i doubt the doors been replaced, theyre both the same color inside and out and they both have the plastic lining behind the pannel thats held up by stuff that looks like banana laffy taffy. no bondo either.
would there be an extra lead if it has the defogger element in it?

Yep... it's normal. Passenger is 2 parts, driver is 1 part. I think you even have to cut away some aluminum to get the mirror & motor out of the drivers side mirror body. Or maybe I did it the hard way?
uhh i think you did it the hard way, mine came out pretty easily but there is a specific way to do it i noticed.
i didnt bother taking the wires out of the driver side, its of a different plastic or mabe it was because there was more exposed plastic, either way the paint/primer reacted differently on the driver side than the passenger side. its really orange peely on the driver side resulting in a matte finish...i sprayed a little extra on the driver side so mabe i can get it to look more like the passenger side, less orangepeely and have some shine to it, if i take some fine sand paper or just some rubbing compound and some wax.
sucky thing is i drive this car every day (which isnt sucky) but what ever i do it kinda has to be 1 day jobs unless i can borrow some ones car (the sucky) which i dont think would happen to often
