Shifter springback

I have a quick question about shifter feel, I have an 83' NA with the stock nissan 5 five speed, not the borgwarner transmission.
I was wondering if the shifter is always supposed to return to center, right now on mine you can push the shifter toward the 5th and reverse row and it will spring back if let go, but if you push toward 1st and 2nd row, it will stay there and spring back a little but not completely to center. So im wondering if I have a spring broken to push the shifter back to center or if thats just how the transmission was made. anybody know?

Mine has always done that and I thought it was normal, thinking it has something to do with the lockout to prevent you from going from 5th to reverse.

Do you mean while in motion, or while parked? Mine stays in while driving, but I haven't played with it while in park.
