Quick question i have.
Background info: So when i got my 1983 280zx from the previous owner it came with only one key in the ignition. I've tried turning it as if i wanted to turn on the car, but it was stuck. I was also told that originally buying the Z, that it came with 2 keys, one to open the doors/hatch/and gas cap, and the 2nd to turn on the car. The key i had opened all of those components so i was think i was only given that certain key and not the ignition key. But today (9-3-12) i managed to unlock the ignition to finally turn it completely but i have to insert my key only a certain distance into the slot to turn it.
So this is my question. Does the "ignition key specifically", from the 2 keys that should be given, can it also unlock the other components?

From the factory there was one key for all locks (doors, hatch, glove box, ignition).
It's very common on older Japanese cars for the ignition tumbler to pretty much self implode, requiring an aftermarket replacement and different key.

Typicaly it's the key that wears out. If you get a good locksmith or have the key patern numbers (glove box, docs, etc) they can cut the key to the original specs - not to the worn out original.
The 280ZX (and most Datsuns for that mater) have cruddy key/ignition/locks. You could probably start most of them with a popsickle stick. Back in the day my buddies use to "steal" each others cars with their own Datsun keys.
Note to (your)self - install a kill switch in your Datsun..
