Question on Head Work

Im looking at buying a 79 280zx. It has some engine problems, and the guy says water had been leaking into the cylinder. I was wondering what might cause this and what other problems it could make. Also, how much would a used head cost if I needed to replace it? thanks in advance.

If it really is leaking coolant into a cylinder, it's usually the headgasket... which means he prolly overheated it / abused it. The head may or may not be damaged, but should definately be sent to a machine shop for a check over. Expect $100 - $200 for headwork.

And welcome to ZDriver!

Alright. Im really planning on getting the car and taking off the head to figure out the problem. If it comes down to getting a new head I'll let you know and maybe we can work something out.How much would you be willing to sale the head to me for?

If you don't mind me asking, where might you be located because i'm kinda sure those things are expensive to ship. I also have a couple i'd be willing to part with for next-to-nothing just to free up some space. Anyhoo, WELCOME AND HELLO ^.^ *Hugs*

Thanks for everyones help, and thanks for trying to help Snwbrderphat540. I ended up not getting the car due to shipping problems and untold problems coming up in a conversation with the owner. Thanks for everyones help and I hope to be back someday.

remember

if its a bad leak into the engine it can be much worse than just head work, Water tends to cause the engine to "scallop" the cylinder walls.

These cars aren't hard to come by with decent engines, they're more hard to come by with a decent body.
