Oil Pump Going?

Well after a week of nicer weather it's back to below 30 and a bunch of snow...

Anyway after all that time what I thought was lifter tick on my car when it starts up I'm beginning to think is rod knock. It does it for a couple of seconds before it all quiets down. I wonder if this means my oil pump is going or what? I hope my engine is still in decent shape. I really don't know though it's hard to tell and it bothers me. When I startup the car it's loud as hell. Sounds like clacking is the best way to describe it. Goes away after a few seconds. One time when I revved it up the sound got quite a bit faster than went a way after a moment. I've not had any chances to do the conversion to solid lifters. I'm hoping to do that when I pull the engine for the turbo swap. It's still hard to say. Since I've never really heard either or with someone there to tell me which is which it's hard to say. I'll see if I can get a video of it tomorrow.

Here's a video I took back in January when my car was having issues. I got the noise for about a second or so. I'll try to get a better video tomorrow.

I'm wondering if I should think about replacing my oil pump. I'm also wondering if I would have been better off running 5w-30 for the temps we hit.

oil pumps hardly go bad. no real reason for them to! also, if it was rod knock, you would know it would be coming from deep inside the motor and wouldnt stop. i think your paranoid

This is a rod knock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT7_xSGgRx4

Yours sounds like an exhaust leak... that "puh puh puh!" sound... maybe a better video?

Yeah I'll try to grab a better video. I know I do have an exhaust leak though. Even after I fixed that broken stud I know the manifold does leak some. That's why I'm also planning to redo the gasket and get the exhaust manifold resurfaced to make sure.

Hopefully I really am just paranoid.

lol how long have you had this exhaust leak? i thought you redid the gasket

btw how did you get the stud out (i assume it was the one closest to the firewall?)

and about the sound your hearing, could it be the timing chain tensioner? i have the same sound but i also have an exhaust leak...

I did redo the gasket. After I got done, I eventually ran seafoam through it. I could see that white smoke was still coming from the exhaust area. Not exactly sure where, but after reading I've found that the manifold apparently have a tendency to warp. At least this is what I've read on hybridZ. So I'm going to eventually pull it, send it off to be resurfaced and when I put it back together use one of the intake/exhaust gaskets that have the metal backing for the exhaust side.

I tried to catch another video of this today except both times I got the noise it did it then stopped super quick. Basically I'm wondering if it's the lifters or my question about the oil pump, maybe the pump isn't lubricating the motor quickly enough and that's why I'm hearing that noise? It's hard to say.

i don't really think they get warped as much as they are eaten away by the hot exhaust fumes, mine was eaten away 2 almost 2 1/2 mm when i put a straight edge across my ports... so ima upgrade to a "MSA Exhaust Manifold"

id like to see that video from what your saying it sounds just like my car, when i crank it in the morning i get all the clackety clack and tapety tap but after about a minute it goes away...

Either way I'm going to pull it and see if I can get it resurfaced, that's probably why the gasket with the meta inlets helps then. I gotta pull the whole thing anyway as I'm going to put on my N42 egr-less intake.
