Oil pump

Oil pump
Need some input on reusing oil pump. Ok I am in the process of rebuilding a 83 turbo motor, to swap into my 78 z. What are your guys thoughts on reusing the old oil pump, donor car had over 150k miles, the machine shop said the crank was in perfect condition. He said with the crank looking so good he recomends using the the oil pump, trying to save a little money here. However do not want to come back and bite me at a later time.

Oh, I wanted to mention about the oil pump. If you forget to prime it, like I did. And get the cover and stuff back on. There is another way to prime it. Where the distributor is, pour some oil down that shaft. And the oil pump will get primed that way. Believe me, I tried it, instead of having to take the timing cover back off. It worked..just thought I would share.

Thanks for the replies, What is the proper way to prime a oil pump? I have read three ways to do it. 1) Fill the oil pump with oil and the filter. 2) Use a drill with some kind of a tool to spin the shaft in the oil pump. 3) Turn the key, with the spark plugs out , in short 10 second bursts. And I am assuming after completing the priming , you should start to see oil coming up through the valves and cam?

The drill method is used on V8's (common Chevy / Ford practice). Just fill the pump & filter w/ oil, disconnect the coil (and preferably the fuel pump connector in the hatch area), crank a few times, and you are good.

Thanks Nismo, even though these are my first posts, I have been a member since 07 and have been reading this forum, and other Z forums. I have planned to turbo my z since I bought it, I am fairly confidant in the basics of the swap. I still have unanswered questions, that I feel comfortable asking on this board when the time comes.
