oil pressure

Hey i got my motor in I'll get pictures as soon as i can find my camera. On the first start-up of a new motor it says pull the fuel pump relay and crank the car until it builds up oil pressure. how long does it usually take to build pressure by just cranking the car? I don't want to keep cranking the motor over if the oil isn't moving....

really mine usually start building pressure, in like five sec. right before the car starts.

On a freshly rebuilt motor it will take a while to build up the pressure by just cranking w/ the starter. Did you prime the pump & filter w/ oil when you installed everything? That helps a lot. Do 3 or 4 rounds of 10 to 15 sec cranks & then let it start. It's also a lot better to have the sparkplugs out so the engine can rotate much easier.

that's with the car running. She's reved up when it's running. Means a faster spinning oil pump. but with turning with starter, it takes longer

if you read you hanes, or fsm, you should install your oil pump with oil already in it to help stop wearing it severly. this also helps to get oil moving quicker. yes take out the spark plugs, stop the fuel pump from going, and never turn it over for more than 15-20 seconds at a time to avoid burning out your starter. then re-install everything, plugs and such. then start the car up, and run it at 2500 rpm for 20 minutes, this will be your initial break in. it is very important to engine life down the road. b4 you start up make sure all fluids are topped up, and there are no leaks, you dont want to have to shut down just for a leak. i have built many engines, and got them going, some sbc's over 400hp. they all last very long, and go like stink. also talk to the machine shop if you are unsure aboot anything else, or ask us
