Oil

Hello everyone. First off I would like to say I am new here and you guys have a nice looking forum. I currently own a 2002 Toyota MR-S that I autox religiously in CSP. I have tried to make use of your guys' search engine, but to no avail. I did see a sticky above that told me to check for oil leaks before buying - and if there is an oil leak "all" gaskets need to be placed.

Well here is my situation. I just traded my 97 civic hatch with an integra ls motor for an 82 280zx turbo with 87k miles on it. The catch is: it has an oil leak. I am not 100% sure what they guy tried to do to fix this - but can someone go a little further into detail about which gaskets I should go for first?

I cant be all that much help as I dont even know how much it leaks. Sorry for the lack of info and thanks for any help.

w00t! Welcome to ZDriver!

Well, your guess is as good as ours unless we have pics or more info about the general area of "leakage" (front / back / side of engine?).

Where does it look like it's coming from? Where is the oil most concentrated?

A good start would be to clean the engine bay if it's caked w/ grease... then you can see more clearly.

from my experience, the most likely places are the main seals (front and back of the crank shaft), and the head gasket. they should both be easy to pinpoint. other than that, the valve cover gasket, and the oil pan are next. then there are lots of.... freeze plugs? i think that's what they are called.

thats cause you dont know L motors. most likely its the oil pan or the timing cover seal which is just a ring seal around the crankshaft in the timing cover. or the valve cover gasket. lets hope for your sake it isnt the oil pan gasket since from what i hear on the S130 (the 280zx) you need to lift the motor up a bit to get the pan off. in the S30 (240z 260z 280z anything pre 1979) you can get away with just squeezing by the cradle/steering rack.

Freeze plugs are in the coolant ports.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I atleast have some headstars on where to look when I go and pick it up today. It shouldn't be hard to find - but there is a lot of stuff under that hood. It looks a lot more cramped than my mr2 lol.

Hey guys the oil looks like it is coming from the main seal. Does anyone know a good place to get a quality gasket?

AutoZone / Checker / Napa / Kragen / Pep Boys / MSA / Nissan / BDA / Courtesy Parts / Your local engine machine shop.

Take your pick.

The front main seal is fairly quick (compared to other gaskets)
