Noise from the dash

My 83 has something squea ling from behind the dash. I have the auto climate control and I turned the fan off but the sound was still there. The only way to make it stop is to turn the key off. Brings me to two questions;
1. With the auto control does the fan still run even if the system is off?
2. What else would there be in there to make a squealing noise?

If I remember correctly, there's a little fan - much like a computer fan - that keeps the controls cool, I believe. That fan could be wearing out, or perhaps has spun a bearing. Maybe unplugging it or replacing it could help.

Hope this helps,

Awesome! :hpydance: Any idea on the general location of the fan? I bet I could find a replacement at RadioShack.

to the right of the center of your dash you should see a little round vent. (half inch diameter) straight below that is a little spinning fan that sucks in air to see how hot or cold it is inside. That fan is probably what is making the noise. They go out as well as the thermostat they are attached to. (this is why the auto climate sucks)

You can get to it if you remove the glovebox.

What would be a better option - replacing the fan and thermoresistors to get the system to function properly, OR changing to a more controllable manual setup?
