No oil pressure

New to the 280 scene always been into cars and relearning on the l28 i bought a 79 that sat a while , got it running then the valves stuck and yuk. So i pulled the head had it machined replaced the intakes and springs . Put back together timed it up filled and primed oil pump and great pressure with switch on and drill running. Replace with shaft in it and no pressure at all. Shaft is turning with rotor but scared to go much further any suggestions?

Welcome to ZDriver!

How did you hook the drill up to the oil pump? On or off the timing cover?

the pump was in the cover , i topped it with oil before install i even cracked the filter and got a good stream coming out there and at the cam but when i retime the shaft and put it back on poof no pressure a real head scratcher could the dots on the pump and shaft getting out of alignment cause this?

Did you use a special rod to connect the drill to the oil pump? Because the stock oil pump / distributor shaft is connected to the crank shaft and won't spin unless the engine is spinning.

You got the pre-filling right, but it's easiest to just disconnect the coil wire & crank the motor until the oil light turns off.

At this point, I'm worried that you shredded the pump shaft gear if you used it to prime with a drill.

No i removed the shaft primed it with an old cut down screwdriver then dropped the pump again and reinstalled . i know the worm gears right because of ccwise rotation , even took the plugs all out to make it easier to spin .If the dots on the shaft and pump get put of alignment will that do it? I have 50-60 with drill and driver inserted .

Success on the 79

Finaly got oil pressure today , dropped the swaybar to make sure my dots on oil pump shaft stayed lined up guess i was a tooth or too off and the slower spinning of the engine wouldnt get me pressure. So glad to hear it run on starting spray. Just have to put on the pulleys and belts and should be good to go . I got away with not having to drop the oil pan but guess lesson i learned always drop that sway bar
