New Motor
New Motor
Recently picked up a new OLD Turbo motor out of a 82' at the local junkyard. The motor came complete with everything including transmision, all with only about 80k miles. I was hoping the turbo would be in good shape but it has about 5 feet of shaft play.
I attached some pictures below, it took me about 5 cans of PB penatrating fluid just to get that far. It may be pretty dirty on the outside but like my motor, the cylinder walls are in excellent shape, they still have all the cross hatching all the way up the cylinder. And the head is in good shape too.
The reason I started this thread was to get some suggestions. I definately want to do something with this motor but not sure how crazy I should go, its going to be a long project.
I was originally thinking of doing a 3.0/3.1L motor but its getting hard to find a LD28 crank for cheap. Or myabe just throw some forged pistons in it and call it good. As for the head either way I want to invest most of the money here. Theres a guy over at HybridZ that does some awesome head work, Ill probably talk to him. That and a different cam too.
Is there anything else I am missing? I can put together a dirtbike motor no problem but not sure if this is something I can handle? But after reading the FSM it seems pretty straight foward.
Also seeing as as Iv never built a car motor before, what should I have the machine shop do when the time comes. I was planning on having them clean and balance everything, but not sure what else should be done???
And last but not least I also just bought a new Holset turbo, I attached some pics of that too
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

You did a great job on your previous setup... so I know you're capable of this next one. What is your hp / torque / main goal on this new engine? Ask yourself that... then build accordingly.

Im really not sure what my goals are. I know my new turbo will probably support around 400whp. And I think anything over that might be overkill, epecially for a junior in highschool
Im not sure if I should really bother with the whole stroker thing?? Thats a lot more money that I might not have. Like I said Im open to any suggestions..Thanks
Don't bother with the stroker motor. It's not worth the effort in my opinion.
Forged pistons and rods and you'll be able to handle plenty of power.
The stock cam and head can handle around 300+hp, so I would aim for that first as you won't loose anything by building to that point if you want to build bigger later. Bear in mind, the stock intake manifold is the biggest restriction on the intake side of these motors.
The stock P90 head is exceptionally well designed and far outflows the stock intake manifold. Spending a lot of money on the head will be a waste without significant work on the intake manifold or an entirely custom manifold. This is also why the 60mm TB's don't make as big a difference as most people expect. Any advantage gets choked down by the intake manifold.
To hit the 300hp mark, you'll need new fuel management. This is where your expertise in electronics will be tested the most. Higher flow fuel pump and injectors will be a pre-requisite.
MegaSquirt & Spark with a wide band O2 sensor could be your base if you want a nearly DIY solution for under $800. You'll need to convert to a Mass Air sensor and drop the stock Air Flow Meter.
There's a tome that could be written and fortunately, it's mostly already written on this site.
Good luck and remember, HAVE FUN!
Cheers,
LWW

Thanks for the help LWW,
I was thinking about going with one of those Lonewolf intake manifolds, but theyre pretty expensive. This may sound like a stupid idea but... What if after having the head work done, I port match the stock runners to what ever size needed. Then Make a custom surge tank. Im not sure how much work would have to go into designing a good surge tank??
And as for fuel management and what not I already have the following things on my current motor that I would just carry over,
Megasquirt n spark
Innovative wideband
MSD hi flow fuel pump
520cc injectors
and some other junk
And with Megasquirt there is no need for either an AFM or MAF
As for the stroker, unless I come across a diesel crank or something I dont think Ill waste my time. Ill probably put the money towards Meth injection or something?
But thanks for the help and Id apreciate any feedback on my stupid manifold idea
