Need your help guys...
I just ran into a guy that has a 1979 280zx coupe slicky with a manual tranny. The car body itself is rough but the car runs good as well as the A/C. It has 140,XXX miles on it...it's nasty brown and tan....he said make an offer. I don't want to insult him but the car is not pretty to look at inside or out. I told him I was just looking for a parts car and he said it still has some good parts so it should do me well. What do you think I should offer him??? It sounds like he really doesn't want it anymore.
Sounds like he's ok with the parts car thing, so I'd go at least $300, but it's ultimately up to you. You don't want to rip the guy, so consider $500, if you see that the parts are worth it (i.e is the price of the car worth the 5 speed tranny, etc..).

Cool, this gives me a starting point...like I said I don't want to insult him, the worse he can do is say no and I guess I would move on. Yeah, I am thinking pull the drivetrain and whatever usable parts from the body like the glass and trim parts from whatever to whatever. The car has aluminum louvers on the back glass...I have never seen them in person, seems pretty sturdy though not my taste.
if they are factory ones, they are worth more, if they are aftermarket louvers, not so much. factory ones fit on the hatch, the others go inside the glass edge. post a pic later and i can show you. just saw that, carl has the factory looking ones.
Well since there are some people posting what they paid for their Z's here are mine.
1981 280zx slicktop: $2295 (too much but didn't know any better back then, but don't regret it either, it is what got me loving the Z's)
1982 280zx t-tops: $200
1983 280zx t-tops: $350

Well the guy wasn't home today so maybe I can speak with him tomorrow. Also, after reading the "specs" section in here, looks like the '79 came with two manual tranny's. I hope like hell the one that is in it is the 5 speed cause the gear ratios aren't that far off from the T5 tranny so it should launch pretty good, plus I want that 5th gear for cruising and interstate travel. I keep getting butterflies when I think about getting another ZX.

i traded a sailboat--26'-for my na z31--i got my 1986 turbo for 200$ AND MY ae FOR 3000$-----OFFER 500--it runs ok, right?? and has extra parts--so 500 sounds ok----good luck.....
Yeah that's what I am thinking...between $300 and $500. He said he will keep it in the garage until I come up with the money...whatever we decide on. Should take me no more than 3 weeks to get the car at those prices...then it's full on tranny swap time.
Well I went to talk to the guy again but again not home. I looked at the louvers pretty close, they are aluminum and are screwed to the hatch not the glass area. Someone has put clear silicone on them for some reason...not sure the louvers are desirable...looked a little ragged, but rebuildable. There is another ZX in the area and has been there for a while...sitting on the side of a goodyear tire garage since well before Christmas. I have talked to the head garage guy but he also has not heard from the guy...it is a 2+2 5 speed with minor front end damage....why are these Z drivers so hard to get ahold of???? I want my MOTHER F#$king 5 speed!!!
