mystery bits
Hi noob here from the UK a friend of mine recently asked me to help him fix up his old 280zx
in the first 2 pics there is a wire that is not connected to anything and we have no idea where it goes, the car is right hand drive UK spec, in the other 2 pics there is what looks like a breather pipe coming from underneath the AFM area it looks like something should be connected to it but again cant seem to find where any help at all will be very much appreciated thanks

Welcome to ZDriver!
The wire looks like the RF condenser wire. It runs from the coil harness to a little condenser / cylinder and then to the spade connection on the base of the distributor. Not a necessary item.
As for the second question on that "breather pipe", there are several vacuum lines that run to the distributor advance, egr, and carbon canister. Just gotta search for a loose vacuum line.
Download the FSM (factory service manual) from www.xenons130.com/reference and you can look up all the Nissan diagrams (USA and EURO) at http://nissan4u.com

man that things pretty corroded, and i'll bet your are going to have some wiring problems because of that, if you don't want to deal with cleaning all the connectors you may want to look into this:

Yup and I just got in a few brass barrel connectors too if you need those added to the kit.
The condensor cap is a noise filter for the electronics. Is the end of the black wire disconnected? Does it have a female spade connector on the end? If so it probably goes to the ground tab on your dizzy

hi again, thanks for all the replies its very much appreciated as always. the links were very interesting reading too although a little over whelming lol. BUT im still having problems, that wire is still a mystery as its not the rf condenser thingy coz that is all present and correct and connected its the black and yellow one thats from a different part of the loom that im holding in the pic, i cant seem to find where it goes, also that little vaccum/breather pipe coming from underneath the throttle body/chamber is still bugging me as i cant seem to find what it should be connected to either. The engine is running like a complete sack o crap it has a bad missfire it pops and bangs and has no power,
Jobs i have done is replaced all sensors temp etc replaced AFM with a known working one also air regulator and FPR, replaced any corroded connections with new ones cleaned sensor plugs as best i can and cleaned up all the ground connections, tried to sort the timing out too but with air leaks and various other things i dont think im ever gonna get it right until eveything is connected properly

The vacuum line under the throttle body goes to the charcoal evap canister. Cap it off if you want. All that info is in the FSM that NismoPick refered to. It really has the vast majority of the answers in there.
Did you replace every vacuum line in the engine bay? May as well - it's a cheap way to get to a good know reference point.
The wire... hmm - what year is the car? NA/Turbo?

this is what i could find thats even remotely close to the yellow/black....is the main color black with a yellow stripe, or yellow with a black stripe, I cant tell.

Cold start valve uses and EV1 connector so that wouldn't be it...

Wait ain't that the wire for the little fan that blows on the inake?? My 81 had it it ties up with the temp sensor in the thermostat. By the way it looks did the car sit long? Could be gas or fuel filter causeing the crappy issues. Mine blew smoke backfired and stalled for two tanks then as I filled up the third time it calmed down and quit smokeing.
