multi meter use for part test
Hey all! Thanks so much for the great info i have been reading. I just bought a 83 280 zx, love the car!! second motor with around 90 k on it 190k over all. engine n tranny seem strong. I have the bible for the fuel injection and the repair manual.
i have read that most of the fuel problems can be diagnosed with a common multi meter to check resistance from the cpu on the front left kick panel under the steering wheel. I have never used one before and would love the best way to do this with out frying anything or breaking the multi meter. I have more of a background in body work and no real electrical experience but am ready to learn!!I love this 280 zx! Any one have experience checking resistance or maybe the best way to use the multi meter, settings to use, battery connected or not, ignition on or not, do u use both red and black pins, do i ground one, if yes to what? as stated i am new at the electrical end of this and would love to test the whole system before i start swapping out parts. Terrible fuel mileage at the moment round 240 mile highway mostly to a 21 gallon tank with driving it easy. its a 3 speed N/A auto which i plan to swap in time but for now its my daily driver and want to figure this multi meter thing out.
Thank you all so much seanmichael.nugent@gmail.com is my email if anyone wants to hit me direct.

Welcome to ZDriver!
The FSM outlines how to test each sensor with a multimeter: XenonS130 - S130 Reference
Once downloaded, check out the EFEC section (Engine Fuel and Emission Controls). It has the wiring schematics so you know what wires to test. You can use the multimeter probes inserted directly into the connection, but that will usually push open the metal tabs and create more connection problems. I use 2 lengths of telephone wire, wrap one end around each probe, then insert into the sensor connection or ecu connection. Much less invasive that way.
Anyway, we're here to help!
