Motor. Pulling

My Motor, Ain't working. I will be pulling Motor from part's car. Probly pull them both Saterday. Gona start tomarrow. Unbolt, disconnect wireing and hose's. and what not. I am pulling bothe trany's. Gona keep the 5 speed on the motor that work's. Plus I am so used to Standard's. When I move the 5 speed into a car that was auto, must I swap ECU's? also, please tell me best way(s) to pull them. I will be rebuilding my Motor with the turbo set up I will be pulling one day this month or so. Also, I might be pulling the rear end off the 5 Speed(3.9 and replaceing the 3.54. Maby.

Yes you HAVE to swap the ECU's. They are not compatible. I personally prefer dropping a motor. But if you've gotta pull it then just use a hoist. Just make sure you've got plenty of room hieght wise

Go with the 3.9

Just unplug ECU, pop new one in? or is there more to it? I have never done this before. So please let me know. Both motor's are 83. both are the same.

Depends. I'm not too familiar with the 83 and if there were any wiring differences or not. If all the wiring is the same then yeah, just plug it in. At the very worst, you plug it in and it doesn't work and then you can just switch harnesses too.

I would check a ECU PIN layout in a haynes first before I did just the harness

You like that "just" part. Made it sound like a stroll through the park huh? Well I guess if you were a 1200lbs obese man then a stoll through the park might measure up to doing a wiring harness. But yeah, check it out to make sure. That's why I said I don't know. I don't have access to 83 diagrams and I've never personally dealt with an 83 to know the compatilbility.

Will strait pipe's on a N/A offer enough backpressure? I don't want to damage anything. And have to do muffler work.

P.S. I have no emission's restriction's here.

You'll be fine with a straight pipe. Should offer no negative side affects. Back pressure (or a lack there of) doesn't really kill horsepower. It just negates the lower end of the powerband because the exhaust pulses are not able to help each other evacuate the cylinders harmoniously. Of course at higher RPM's when all they want to do is get the exhaust out as fast as possible you'll start to see the benefit of less backpressure. And the cat isn't just a restriction in itself, it can become blocked making even more of a restriction. A straight pipe would never block up.

I do not condone the removal of any federally mandated emissions equipment.

I got one very big question..

Will I have to get a new drive shaft? If I am moveing a standard 5 speed trany from a two seater. Into a 2+2. The 2+2 has an auto trany. is the drive shaft gona match up to the new 5 speed trany in the 2+2?

You'll need a drive shaft from a 2+2 w/ 5-speed. The length is different between 2+2 vs. coupe and 5-speed vs. Auto.

Listen to the man: 1) Hes an admin. 2) And with over a million posts, he's bound to know a thing or two. 3) He has his Z meets at Hooters (that's reason enough).

The man's obviously got his head screwed on straight (especially since he got rid of that incriminating sig )

Finding that drive shaft is not going to be easy. There is a very small #of 2+2's here. and even smaller # of 2+2's with a 5 speed. I figured they would not fit. So I asked before I started to break down my part's car.

One of the 2+2 5 speed guys on here can measure the shaft length from center of yoke to yoke and you can have your's lengthened or shortened by a drive shaft shop depending on which way you need to go.

I've never had a 2+2 or an auto and can't remember which one has the longer casing and shorter drive shaft.

I think the auto has a smaller case and therefore a longer drive shaft. How much longer, I couldn't tell ya.

I might still have my 2+2 NA driveshaft from my car. I'll see if its around and then measure it for you.

I Finaly got my part's car in the Air!!!!!!!!.. way in the air. Took a look. most thing's are ok. Looks like some one ran over a huge log in the road. This is gona be fun. I got to scrape about 2 inches of "Black Stuff" off diff and every thing around just to find the bolt's. I can se just about 3 inches of the drive shaft due to heat shildeing's. the more I look, the more I want to stick with the 3.54. But Since we are starting a car club here. (two 280's and a 87 T-Top firebird) I am gona need the 3.90 to keep up with the firebird. Before I do all this hard work. I want to make sure this 3.90 wil bolt right up to my 2+2.

The diff will bolt up to any 280ZX with no changes. It's the drive shaft length that's different.
