Max boost for 280zx turbo????????
General rule I've been told is 12 psi, but it all depends on a number of factors like engine condition, octane rating, a/f ratio, ignition condition, fuel setup, etc. However there are some people who have gone as high as 15 psi without an i/c so just be careful as you turn the wick up.

In CA its not going to be much dude, we have MTBE gasoline here, unless you shop at 76 or BP which use ethanol to help boost octane.
I'd say for a Californian, under 10 pounds. There is a local guy running 13 pounds with no intercooler, on I believe 100 or better octane, so that is ONLY at the track. You also have to make sure you have the fuel for it, have you a rising rate regulator, or bigger injectors, or both? If not, stay conservative, and go slowly. If you ping, it could be the ping of death, so I would advise not going up more than one pound at a time, and sticking to whatever gasoline you use instead of changing, unless for the better.

I would not go over 9 or 10 psi, and you will have to get rid of the dumb pop off valve if you get over 7psi I believe.
Get an intercooler and have more fun. You can run 12 to 13 psi on the stock fuel system, but getting beyond that requires more fuel.
