Low-Pitch rubbing/grinding. (rear end)

Hey all,

I've got a low pitch rubbing/grinding sound that sounds like the driveshaft is rubbing smoothly on the frame (but it isn't). I can only hear it when the clutch is out so I'm pretty sure it can't be anything past the transmission.

These symptoms typical of anything?

you mean you can only hear it when the clutch is engaged? that could be anything from the flywheel to the rear half shafts..... this isnt something we can really diagnose. its all you. we can throw ideas though, but really, your gonna have to get down and dirty and try to pin point where the noise is coming from. hard to suggest much if your not there in person you know what i mean?

If you hear it revving the engine when the car is parked in neutral it's something either engine or clutch/transmission related. If it only does it in certain gears it's transmission related. If it only makes noise when you're moving, it starts at a given speed , and keeps getting higher and higher pitched or vibrates quicker and quicker, it's driveline related. If it's the last case, it could be anything from a bad U-joint in the driveshaft or rear axle shafts, a wheel bearing, brake disk rubbing a wore out pad or caliper, bent or out of balance wheels and tires, or something in the diff like a bad bearing or gears. Way too hard to try to diagnose something like this over the internet since there's so many different things it could be.

Yay! Another "guess that noise" thread for the same car!!! At least this time you actually heard the noise.

So... Imma go ahead and say: it sounds like you are a beginner mechanic. I suggest taking the car to a repair shop and have them take a listen... cost: $0 answer: in less than 5 minutes.

since you seem to think its the rear though, with the car running, but it in nuetral and let the clutch engage, if you hear teh noise, its probably the clutch assembly somewhere, if not, start driving the car, while its still rolling once again put the stick in nuetral (make sure your still moving) if you hear the noise you know its behind the tranny, at least. if the noise stops, its inside the tranny!

Not necessarily true. If it had a output shaft bearing in the transmission going out, it could still make noise with it in neutral while rolling because the shaft would still be turning thanks to the driveshaft.

is it when your moving or just when the clutch is engaged? if your stopped and the clutch is engaged it could be your front case bearing. if your moving and its in all gears it could your rear case bearing.

I've done my fair share of automotive work - don't jump to conclusions. It seemed like a good idea to ask here because I'm sure the 280 has common problem parts.
