Hello im new

Hello, I've admired Z's for so long.. im 15 right now and summer is approaching and i've been looking for a car. (earlier in the summer i found a '69 mustang coupe i was prepared to buy.. but the seller pulled out from selling it) and now i want a 280zx.. my brother is always against me when it comes to car related stuff. "oh get a 300zx they're nice omg 280zx are ugly and old and suck) im so tired of him always putting down my taste in cars Well now im looking for a 280zx coupe.. preferably 5 speed. There is an auto coupe near me but my brother is saying "oh you'll regret not waiting to get a 5 speed speed, blah blah" Do you think i should look into this car.. my brother really pisses me off sometimes I feel like i can't do anything. I just wish he would move out since he is already 24 and still living at home.. sorry for the long rant but here is the car i was looking at btw if you know of any zx's near me for sale let me know please.. my zip code is 10983 and i live in rockland, NY (by the city) thank you

heres the link to the car im considering

That's a very good looking car, but a bit over priced. the front chin spoiler looks crushed in the middle too. You should be able to find a better example for less money... keep looking. Automatic isn't so bad unless you are serious about performance. If so, stay with a 5 speed. Good luck with your search, welcome to ZDriver and keep us posted on what you find. There is a great "Sticky" thread on what to look out for when buying a 280ZX.

Rod.

Sticks are fun, but as I get older, going to be 28. And I got my first automatic ever, 05 Civic. I kinda like the auto, no heavy *** stage 3 clutch to keep pressing in and out. Rush hour traffic is definetly alot easier. So auto's are not all that bad. Probably easier for a new driver too. Just throwing that out. Welcome

for an east coast Z, that's a really good price. Those cars are pretty rare over there... well, any old car is getting rare on the east coast.

the only problem on the east coast is the chance of rust is much higher so make sure you check the pans and frame rails. Don't hate me for asking but you do know how to check for bondo on the body right?

ding ding ding!! You win the $100,000 prize!

Don't trust any 'new' paint job. It's most likely there to cover up significant problems or it was put on by Maaco, or something like it, to sell the car.

New paint is a red herring and should add NO value to the car unless you can verify who did the job and how good of a job they did.

This is the only kind of paint job that will add value to the car, but no more than the 18,500 confirmed miles that are on the odometer:

yeah, the ol' fridge magnet method

I checked it out last saturday, the front was actually banged up a bit.. My dad and I were pretty sure that it was in an accident. the guy didn't want to budge on the price, he was telling how rare of a car it was and everything. It was pretty stout the engine but we couldn't go over 50 since it was the city and also 5:30pm. It actually felt kinda weak lol compared to my moms ford focus.. it may have needed a tune up, who knows. My dad couldn't even get him to budge and he's been a car salesman/ lease manager for 12 years. The guy was saying how he could get much higher for the car and that the price was great for this "rare and soon to be collectible car" maybe if it was a turbo model but not a N/A auto lol pfffttttt

I reconsidered, i want a 5 speed haha. I already know how to drive a manual from my brother teaching me in his vw corrado

There's nothing particularily special about that car. Just cause there were some anniversary editions that year doesn't make all the 80's rare The miles aren't so low as to justify a high asking price. He probably dumped more than he wanted to into it and now he's trying to get all his money back.

I have to agree on the auto vs. manual. Manuals are very fun, but sometimes, especially late at night when you're tired and just driving home, there's nothing nicer than an automatic tranny.

I just plain feel uncomfortable driving an automatic car though I feel like I'm always forgetting to do something. I'll find myself slamming my left foot on the brake cuase it's instinctively looking for the clutch. Not shifting makes me feel wrong. And not having a clutch pedal is just plain weird I dont know, I dont feel that driving a manual is any more of a chore than driving an automatic. My left foot and right hand just instinctively know their jobs and theres no thinking about it. Dont get me wrong, if I had to commute with a clutch pedal that took my entire body weight to depress I'd feel differently. But driving on a stock or moderate clutch is almost like driving therapy

i always look for the clutch, my left foot floats just before start-up, and slams on the floor out of habit. thats on most of the city cars though, there always auto, cause cops cant shift

You should buy my turbo zx. Its got a ferrari body kit and very little rust and runs great and everything worksexcept the ac(heat works though and the ac just needs a recharge). Power seats, windows...new tires...

Make me an offer. :]

i just got my 280 ZX 2 weeks ago and it looks really great and runs awesome there also isn't/aren't any problems with it either, except for one speaker in the very front being blown, and i got it for $1850. I also wanted to know if anyone knew where i could get a bumper cover, or a manual transmission because mine is an automatic but i want a manual

Uhhh... How much shifting are you actually doing late at night when you're tired and just driving home... WHEN THERE'S NO OTHER TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD?!
