hack the gibson

Hey, i was wondering if anyone out there has heard of or knows anything about connecting a laptop to the onboard computer in a 80 280zx. Im sure theres all kinds of wonderful misc. info that can be gleaned from it and tinkered with to get the most out of malaise era cars like that. Just wondering.

The 80's computer was so primitive that it can not be hacked or hooked up to. Its approx a 4 bit calculator. There is nothing to hack.

Swap it out for a 1989 300ZX ECU and you can have it re-programmed professionally.

It controls all six injectors together as one. It opens the one bank of injectors in pulses based on 3 main in puts. (I think)
Air flow meter: how far the flap has moved
Throttle position sensor: idle, cruise, or full throttle. (only 3 positions)
Oxygen sensor: minor adjustment for exhaust richness

Its not a very precise fuel injection system so there's really not a lot that tweaking will do. Going to something with a better oxygen sensor and a far better metering device will do wonders for power and economy.
The common (and cheap) upgrade is to use late 80's Nissan 300ZX components. This is a Z31 ECU swap.
The last 2.5 years (mid 1987 to 1989) had 16bit digital ECUs and could be re-programed. Their factory function was very simular to the 1984-86 ECUs though. The late ECU opperates only two banks of 3 injectors. Better than just one bank though.

If you want someting programable by your laptop, search for info on MegaSquirt. Its a fuel injection computer you can build youself. You may like it since you're in IT.

You're thinking a lil too much about that one.

ECCS analyzer, and pretend you have control?

What do you need to do to the later ECUs exactly to be able to access them. Also if I'm not mistaken I think you can use Nistune with the earlier Z31 ECUs. I think primarily because it's their own board that just goes inside the ECU.
