Fly wheel gear rings...
Fly wheel gear rings...
Ok, so I have an manual 82' 280zxt. Its pretty much stock with 120,000 miles. When I got it about 2 years ago, like once a month when I went to start it, it would make a grinding sound. The starter wasn't engaging the flywheel. So after a while I replaced the starter and it continued to grind on occation. Then it started happening more frequently. I checked the teeth on the flywheel and the corner is chipped off of most of them or worn down, as are the teeth on the starter. So now im going to replace the flywheel gear ring but when I was looking to buy one is was presented with the information that there are 2 different rings. One with 120 teeth and the other with 105. So is it possible that the starters that I had, had the wrong number of teeth on them and didn't line up with those on the flywheel ring? Either way I need to replace both. Whats the easiest way to determine which gear ring I have without removing it just yet (shipping take 3 days and I need my car during the week)? Or did this year and model all come with the same one? I had never heard this before but the dude at Kragens told me I could have either one. Also, is the stock clutch a 7 or 8 inch? One last thing. Would anyone recomend this clutch http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/81-89...QQcmdZViewItem (im on a budget). Can anyone help?
Just make sure you get the right gear for your model, specify if it is a coupe or a 2+2 there was a difference between the two. Personally it sounds like your strater's pinion isnt kicking out all the way and jamming on your flywheel. Just make sure you order the parts for your model(2+2 or a coupe)You can get a cheap clutch & pressure plate for $35 if you shop around, if you dont have any major mods I would go that way, no sense in spending the extra $$$. Keep us posted.
