Ive looked all over and don't see this info. I have the l28et engine from 81. I see one hoist point near the power steering pump but there is nothing anywhere else on the engine. I need to change the motor mounts and oil pan gasket so I'm dropping the sub frame. Where would you bolt up to or hook a chain to in addition to the one lift spot I see on the engine if you were to take out the engine or just support it with a rod across the fenders? That one point would only cause it to try to twist when I take the motor mounts off or it could break the one bolt holding the lift point on correct? Where else is a safe point to hook to so i can have two points connected?
The one by the PS pump that you have found and then the other is the rear exhaust manifold bolt. Hopefully its not broke off!
that's so funny you say that. The car once I got it running had a huge exhaust leak. It was missing the rear Intake bolt. The front exhaust stud was broke and so was the rear. I had to weld a nut onto them and pull them out. But Is there supposed to be a mounting point back there or are you supposed to take the bolt loose and put a chain on it? That would break the seal of the gasket. I'm replacing the old bolts with stainless steel studs but they aren't very thick. I dont want it to break again.
Dont use stainless. It is way too soft! You need hardened exhaust studs to replace the broken bolts. The front and rear bolts breaking is very common on these cars. I am told by a very seasoned Z mech that it is because of the heat shield that is on the exhaust manifold, not the one between the intake and exhaust. He recommends removing that shield from the exhaust manifold. You may be able to find a stud kit at your local Oreillys or Napa. Here is what I used on my 3 Z's . Put these in both the front and back holes. Run a tap first to clean the threads. A little red locktite never hurts. You can get a lifting lug like the one on the front to bolt onto the back bolt.
