This "thing" as in the car or CHTS? The 280ZX went from 79-83... the fuel injected L28E went from 76-83. Various options on the motors...

Red face Update

So I got the Z out of the garage yesterday. It starts right up with no problems, repeatedly. It even idles nicely, and will attempt to go at first. But then after a couple of minutes, any time you hit the gas it wants to die. So as santa would do, im makin a list and checkin it twice. Gotta get her runnin!

Have you checked your fuel pressure, timing, adjusted the idle mix screw, changed the fuel, run fuel cleaner????

Post Tune-up help

You may want to run a can of Sea Foam in the tank to clean out any junk or water that may be in the system. It will also help clean out the injectors. You may have to replace the fuel pump, but check the line pressure before you replace it. If the pressure is good, (it should be checked at both slow and high rpm), you may not need to replace the pump. Have you put a cap on the fuel system yet? Good Luck, Rich.

Yes even in the picture the cap is actually in. I cleaned it with a Fuel system cleaner, and put in a new fuel filter. I was actually able to drive it 5 miles or so with no problems. Running a lot better!!

I' m not sure what the hell the guy before me was doing but he wasn't a smart 1! I've taken out so many wires that led to no where, and were more or less fire hazards. It is hitting on all cylinders, checked again tonight. As far as the splices go, haven't looked into it just yet due to all the other stuff. Just glad I was actually able to take it for a ride tonight w/o it dying on me!

Well the guy owned it for like 10 years but he musta thought it was a project. All i saw that he fixed/replaced was plugs, wires, distr., rotor. That musta been hard, lmao! And it does have like a clicking noise coming from the fuel injectors or the engine. Anyone know of a good decently priced exhaust system for the "Z". I'm rusted from headers all the way back, 1 reason why im getting a red smoke?

you really gotta adjust the rocker arms!! thats whats clicking, you can hear it on camera. got a haynes manual? follow the procedure in the book. take your time, that helps lots too believe it or not. it really really sounds like you have a missfire. so did he replace the plugs you said? cause id really look into everything again. if its not the plugs, wires, cap or rotor, id go after the funky connections on the injectors. its like one isnt firing.

oh, do a power balance test, youll find out which one it is. for those who dont know how, just pull one injector plug at a time and listen, if it dont change, thats the problem cylinder. i dont pull the spark plug, casue then you get zapped good, but which every you like!

Adjusting the rocker arms, do you mean a valve adjustment? And yes plugs, rotor, wires, distr. all new and rechecked! As far as the power balance test goes: Am I pulling the electrical connector on the injector, or the injector itself?

Your pulling the spark plug wire off the plug, while its running. Listen to the engine if it changes in the way its running plug the wire back on and go to the next. Its pretty safe as long as your wires are good. And you don`t pull it off the rotor cap side.

Cool O-tay

So I did the power balance test. One of my cylinders wasnt working, I replaced all spark plugs. Checked the wires, distributor, rotor, all in good shape, no marks at all! Still the one cylinder does nothing when wire is removed. I switched out a good wire and still nothing. Also no spark on metal with wire end, but if spark plug is removed and connected to end of wire I get spark!

Ok. So are you sayin that if the wire is around the plug. But not fully connected it fires? Now I would call that crazy. But ahhhhh, three of my cylinders are like that. I have pulled the connector to the rear of the boot. And stuck it back on the plug. No metal touchin metal. Wire spark to plug has to jump, but that's the only way 4,5,6 will run.

Do you have compression in that cylinder?

With a compression tester.

If you don't have a compression tester, since you only want ot check one cylinder, you could always just pull the spark plug and press your thumb over the hole as hard as you can, and have someone else turn the key to crank it. If it pushes your thumb off really hard and pops fairly loud, It probably still has enough compression to at least fire. Might have to press with both thumbs to get enough pressure depending on how strung your hands are. Not really accurate by any means, but it works for basic diagnosis purposes.
