buying an engine

Okay, I have decided to buy an L28ET. No doubt about it. It's the cheapest and easiest way for more power. Next step... Finding one. I guess the top two ways are to search a junkyard, and HOPE you get an engine thats not demolished... or just buy one off of one of these websites that rebuilds and resales. Seems logical. I've seen sites with "rebuilt" L28ET's that list Short Block: $750, Long block: $1200. I can't remember the prices for certain, but they're somewhere in that range. anyway, what EXACTLY would i need to order?? Or if i should be going a different route than ordering online, please let me know/

thanks,
JB

Buy one from a Z-car guy like on this website or on Zcar.com

You'll want as much as possible in your main purchse so the little things won't kill you to buy them individually later. A complete engine should cost you $500-700. $1200 is too much.

You need a head (P90 or P90a ONLY) block F54 with turbo oil pan. turbo intake manifold with turbo injectors.
Turbo Throttle body (or you can custom install a 60mm later)
Distributor and note what "year" the distributor is from. This is important for your setup
ECU (to match year of distributror if possible)
Air flow meter
exhaust manifold for turbo
a turbocharger!
wiring harness
turbo fuel pump

Other things like thermostats, radiators, alternators, starters, that's all universal and can be gotten from your current engine or other NA engines.

We'll be doing this project together this summer I see.

Mine is used but it is a good building block, I am boring, porting, polishing, lightening, and balancing every thing. It does run though. If you want good info on swapping turbo engines go to www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/index.html this is the best damn info I have found out there. Good luck and have fun.

I have the entire 280ZX turbo as a parts car so I have everything I need and more. I'm doing the swap into my 280ZX 2+2. it already has a really nice T5 I just installed.

ok click here scroll down to L28ET... good buy?? I know its a little pricy, but I REALLY dont mind paying for something that is going to be better in the long run. (i.e. me buying a busted engine from a junk yard and having some jacko "rebuild it")

I've been looking for current Z owners that are selling... did stumble accross this on EBAY...> nice engine

$1200 just for a lower end rebuild kit is a lot. If you plan to crank out 500hp then you'll need that kit. If not, then buy a stock rebuild kit.

That guy put an NA performance cam in that turbo. I really don't know if that will work too well. He has a big turbo on there. It probably does not have 500hp like he says.

Thats why you just rebuild the engine yourself..
