Fortunately, nearly any coil can be used with practically any ignition module.

Agreed, when I bought my NA, it had been equipped with an Accel coil coupled to an MSD6AL. However, those aftermarket ignitions need a Tach Adapter (also sold by MSD, Crane) to function properly.

If I remember correctly, a friend of mine has a 6AL on his '86 300ZX, and it doesn't need a tach adapter. Simply connected the tach lead to the tach output from the box. Might be savvy to note that he also has an Autometer tach and shiftlight in addition to the stock digital piece.

Yes. It's based on the duty cycle of the capacitors in the ignition coil itself. If the capacitor can't charge fast enough before discharging at the next spark plug, it will have a power drop off.

The reason the Accel is only good up to 6500 rpm is because their primary market is old school street driven Detroit V8's that are almost never pushed beyond 6500 rpm. They can use cheaper capacitors and keep the price down. That's why Accel is cheaper then MSD or Crane.

Since we run small displacement 6 bangers, we can generally run higher rpm's before the internals start to destroy themselves.

For instance, the 5.9L V8 in my Durango has about a 4800 rpm redline!

A 300ZX may not need one, but the 280ZX does. Some Searches here, and in other Z forums, will confirm that the 280ZX and earlier need the adapter. I don't offhand remember what the consequences of running an aftermarket igntion without the adapter does though, but I believe it just doesn't run right.

A tach adapter costs about $25. Though the Crane and MSD tach adapters look different, either will work with either company (they actually happen to have the same part #). It's an easy 2-wire hookup.
