85mph speedo and odometer matching
As you know, the odometer takes its reading from the same spinning cable that the speedometer gets its signal from. What I started thinking about was the 85mph display limitation of some of our 280ZX's. Now let's say we exceeded the 85mph display and went 100mph. Would the odometer think I'm still going 85mph and calculate at that rate, or would it still be able to tell how fast I'm really going and turn over at the proper rate?

If you take apart a speedometer you will find that the only thing causes the needle to move is a magnet. The spinning cable turns the gears for the odometer, The needle is dragged around by the magnet. The needle and odometer gears are not directly connected.
When a speedometer shop calibrates a speedometer he changes the strength of the magnet so the speedo reads 60 mph at so many revolutions.
