79 280zx Heat Problem
Hello.
My 1979 280zx does not have any heat. How should I go about troubleshooting this? Are there any common problems regarding heat/AC failure?
As far as I know, the heating system doesn't do anything when the **** is turned. It clicks from the off position (I assume) and rolls through cold to hot, but nothing happens. No fans come on and no air is blown through the vents. I can't hear any noise comming from anywhere.
My guess would be a faulty switch. Possibly it is not getting power. I checked the fuse box, and all of the fuses are fine. I plan to remove the heat/AC control box and test to see if it is getting power, and if it is functioning correctly.
Any suggestions?

ok mine is 81 has vaccum system so i assume its same probably that the vaccum hoses are disconected under there , my AC same think i looked under and it was disconected so i gotta hook it up...check the hoses for leaks and check if they are all connected all the way to the engine

If you are not getting any air I would check your fan connections. Hopefully it is just a bad connection. If not you might want to check into a new fan motor. I think Dr.Buddha might have one. If the fan is working then check all your vacume lines. Since everthing on those systems is vacume controlled.
I don't know how the electrical is in your model year, but I have a tube fuse under the dash ('83 n/a) that is connected to the fan motor. The only way I can access it is to crawl under the dash with my head on the floor and feet either up on the back of the seat, or twisted off on the ground...wichever is more comfy! Pull it out and give it a look............solved my heat problem.
Now to find someone to charge my a/c...........

I too have a 79 280zx with heat problems, I am currently in the process of tearing out everything through the dash, sofar its been a biotch trying to get at all the nuts and bolts. If you find out how to fix it tell me, and ill do the same. By your explanation, we have the same problem.

yeah.. i went in a few days ago all gung ho about finding the problem.. or at least isolating it...
the haynes manual isnt a big help.. and the dash is quite hard to get apart. it seems like the person who had the car before me tried to take it apart as well.. but they didnt put all the screws and stuff back together. pita if you ask me. i ended up making no progress.. it took me a half hour just to figure out what the manual was talking about and relate it to my car. im gonna pull it apart again sometime soon.. ill give you a shout if i find anything :-]
duckyz: which side is the fan on? and how do i get to it? cram myself under the drivers side? or the passenger side? pull panels off first? thanks for the hint :-]

Well I tore it up today. You have to take off EVERYTHING to get to the fan. I use the original datsun manual, it makes it seem like these parts just slide in and out with a flick of the wrist. After 50 cuts on each one of my fingers because of sharp metal objects, i gave up. I got to see the fan, its right behind the faceplate and a little to the left. I didnt accomplish anything either, if I had a garage i would gladly take apart the whole dash but I dont, so if you find out the easy way, tell me! Till then i guess ill ride around in a jacket and carry an extra one if i wanna go on a date or somethin. Good luck tearing it up, you'll need it.
