Ugh..that sucks...lol
if youre actually going to wire youre alternator to the battery properly, do what i did. get rid of the fusable links, install maxi fuses. and run a 100 breaker to the alternator. i had an 80 amp, but it kept blowing cause the car draws close to that. i have also installed the gm 120 amp alternator to keep up. also re-wire how nissan has it done. they have one wire running to the fuses, and one to the battery. if the batt. breaker goes, it sends full voltage into the cab (18v!!!) and it blew some stuff. make everything come off the maxis from the batt. and the alt go thru the breaker to the batt. i really should do a schematic, but its done and i didnt take any pix.
yeah i had 18v!!!!! it blew stuff, my wiper dont have intermitant. i changed how its wired after that so everything goes throught the breaker first, then batt, and then powers stuff. i can actually turn off my alternator with the breaker. when the batt gets completely disconnected from the system with the factory wiring, the alternator doesnt have the batt to help regulate itself, so it just puts out whatever it has. its called full fielding. so whatever circuits are hooked up to it, ie. the cab, gets the voltage. but boy did all my lights go on bright.
just make sure you have a load on the alternater or it will blow it.
and i dont see how you had 18 volts unless you changed out the alt pully and even tho the regulator wouldnt let it go past 14 or 15. unless it was shorted out. idk.

read a book on alternators, it will tell you, all alternators are able to make 18v with no battery and no load, look up full fielding. its a chevy alternator and there is a spot you can insert a wire into it and do it manually, not reccomended, but needed for testing sometimes.
