2 Fuel pumps in 1 week? WTF?!

I bought an '82 ZX that had been sitting for a year, do to being unable to start. I replaced the fuel pump & it started just fine...let it run for 20 minutes, all's good. Restart several times, no problems. I come back 2 days later & the new fuel pump was dead too...replaced it (Autozone Lifetime) and it started right up & ran fine. Drove it for 45 minutes, turned it off. Restarted it, Seafoamed the engine, turned it off & waited 10 minutes, restarted & let it run for 20 minutes, then shut it down. 2 days later I go to drive it & the fuel pump is dead again-not turning on with the ignition key. Multiple attempts to start have failed, the pump never comes on. The lines are clean, new fuel filter, tank is clean, tank pickup is clean. I've cleaned the ECU connectors & underhood relays with electric contact cleaner...I have no idea why this is happening!

I pulled the "new" pump & it is dead as a doornail...maybe I'm just getting garbage pumps from Autozone? Maybe there's something like rust or sediment in a line somewhere that I'm not aware of that's causing the pumps to burn out prematurely?

Yes. AutoZone is notorious for bad electrical parts. If you buy it from a Nissan dealer, it'll work. Unfortunately, it'll cost you the arm and the leg...

Oh snap... this is the same prob w/ FDC's 280z. We had to take back the new AZ one as it stopped working.

Yeah, Autozone and Advanced Auto have crappy fuel pumps. I returned 3 at AutoZone and 4 at Advanced :|

I just swapped in another Autozone special. Took it for a drive to top off with some fresh Chevron Techron supreme, also added half a bottle of Stabil to the old gas. It's running great for now...but I'm not confident. I think I'll go junkyarding in the morning & try to replace my main supply hardline, rear fuel damper, fuel pressure regulator & whatever else I can get. Might try for another fuel rail & injectors to send off to Witchhunter to have cleaned & flow tested. It's only $17 per injector & turn around time is 2 days. I don't want to have any problems! On a good note, didn't find any vacuum leaks using the Starting Fluid method.

I too had to return an AZ pump. I just ended up getting an OEM one from a parts car.

Make it three pumps now! GRRRR!!!! I went to the junkyard today to get a few spares...of course the first one I found was an Autozone also! Finally scored an original from an '83. I also got a fuel pressure regualtor & fuel damper to swap for mine, in case they're plugged or bad. This sucks!

What exactly DOES the fuel damper do? It seems to be adjustable...

Smooths out pulses in fuel pressure/volume created by the pump.

Went through ANOTHER Autozone pump! Got sick of it & tossed in a junkyard OEM Jecs pump, which has been working great. The funny thing is that I came across another Autozone pump in the junkyard & it was bad as well, when I hooked it up! I guess their 280ZX fuel pumps need to be avoided at all costs!
