1982 280ZX Turbo Cranking/Running Problems

I am having a problem getting my Z to crank and run period. It will crank after a cold night, and run for a few, the roughness varies while it is running, and if I let off of the gas it dies, if I put it up over 5000rpm it sputters and backfires horribly. The Engine Control Module under the dash on the drivers side has been messed with before. It looks like someone has cut and ran wires together that I dont think should be like that. The haynes manual doesn't provide much information on this other than removal and installation. I belive it is my computer that is causing this problem. The green light on the inside of it is also on. If someone could send me a picture of the way their computer is wired up so maybe I could have something to go by and any other information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to ZDriver!

So it runs normal when started cold, then the probs start when it warms up? Sounds like a sensor prob... like air regulator, CHTS, or AFM.

Have you ever checked the timing? Spark plugs? Cap & rotor? Sensor connections for corrosion? Fuel injectors?

It runs normal for about 30 seconds, then starts sputtering, When it warms up a little get clears up a little and comes back. My fuel injectors are new,Timing is right because I previously twisted the gear and stretched the chain racing, it has since been replaced and timing adjusted. Also I have a turbo model and at this point we have it bypassed because the first owner put too much pressure on it and blew the turbine inside, we had to tear the engine completly down and clean out all of the aluminum inside the engine. Spark plugs are also new alog with the cap. I will check the rest though.

uh... you "bypassed" the turbo? How so? Are you sure you don't have a huge vacuum leak now?

And did this prob just start one day or did something happen?

I didn't bypass the turbo my dad did, I'm not too sure how he did it, but it is sealed up fine. We've had it for about 10 years and have had problems with it ever since, it had times where it ran decent and we drove from north ga to orlando, but we started having problems with it about 2 years ago and my dad just stopped tinkering with it until recently when I went out and tried to crank it one day and it cranked after 2 years of sitting.

Why haven't you just pulled the turbo and have it rebuilt? No sense in trying to diagnose problems if the motor isn't even set up right.

Because the turbo is rusted out, I need to just go get another one, but I don't have 5 or 600$ to get one.

okay, so you have a turbo car, with a turbo ecu set up thats been hacked up, a seized up turbos that still on the car but bypassed?.....man, thats uh....maybe you aughta fix your turbo first. Your car is set up to run with higher than atmospheric pressure, and without the turbo, all you get is atmospheric pressure. and yeah 5-6 hundred sounds about right for a new one. at least as far as i've seen.
