Z31 LSD - Which half shafts to use

I spent an hour or so going through all of the posts that came up under the search for "Z31 LSD" and couldn't find anything that clarified which half shafts were needed to do the swap. It seems that if you have an earlier ZX, 79-81, that you have to get the shafts from the donor car. Does that also ring true with an '83 2+2? I have the CV joint style shafts with the 6 bolt flanges. Will they bolt up to the Z31 diff?

The 1987-89 Nissan R200 clutch LSD uses the stock R200 280ZX half shafts. You do not need (and I think can not use) the Z31 half shafts.

Only the super rare 1988 VLSD unit has unique shafts and you must use the Z31 shafts, modified to fit the 280ZX. Not all 1988 LSDs were that type though. It is unlikely you will ever come accross one.

Thanks Bleach. Now the next question, has anyone used the Subaru diff in their Z? Ii keep seeing quick blurbs on doing this but I haven't seen any real info.

you mean has anyone used an R160 LSD in their Z? hahaha

not that I've heard. Its more of a Datsun 510 thing for those with a non-turbo 4-cyl L-series.

That's all the 'boobaroos have is a 160? I thought I saw reference to 180s and 200s. Makes me wonder what they slap under the WRX STi AWD rearend. It must be pretty stout if they are easily tweaked past 400 bHP. Of course that power is split between all four wheels.

The only Datsun compatible LSD I know of is the R160. If there is an R200 LSD, then it must be a different housing that does not work in the older Z-car.

The S14 has an R200 LSD but it doesn't fit a Z.

This thread should give you most of what you need to know.

http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=114798

The VLSD differential only came in the Z31 in the 1988 Shiro (SS) model. The R200 CLSD was avaliable only in Z31 4/87 to 89 Turbo cars.

Thanks guys, that clears up a lot of confusion. I'm trying to get to the boneyard this week to see what I can find. Not many good choices for imports in the Motor City.
