Wait... were you asking about the turbo compressor maps? I thought you were asking about physical size for fitment...

There are many intercooler options... the size of the IC should take into account the amount of boost you will run, the engine size / hp, and how efficient you want it to be. There are quite a few factors to weigh, and a huge IC isn't always better.

right, ok 12 pounds of boost 2.8 litre, autox car, so mid range power I think. what do you think Nismo?

Intercooler stuff isn't something you need to ask about typically because there is LOTS of info out there on it. Read a few of the turbo books out there and you'll have a good understanding of it all.

This is what I would recomend for an intercooler.

- Don't go too big. You'll just screw up air flow in your engine bay with no benifits. There is lots of cooling action with air moving at velocity - keep the velocity up and you'll get rid of thermal energy. A great way to make a small intercooler more efficient is ducting. Most people overlook it which is too bad. You can probably make most intercoolers up to 25% or more efficient with proper ducting. You want a smaller inlet for the ducting to the intercooler than the face of the intercooler itself. That will create a low presure area that the air will be force into instead of the typical hitting the face of the intercooler and looking for another way around it.

- Long end tanks - same side in same side out. That will reduce the presure drop through the intercooler so you're not wasting presure on an inefficient system. Same side in same side out will reduce your intercooler piping. It's tricky to get two pipes and CAI on the same side on the 280ZX but IMHO worth while.

- Thermal mass. Cast end tanks are heavier but they have more capacity to get rid of heat. When you are under boost it's momentary and you want to take the heat out of the system quickly and have a longer recovery time.
