Thermo-time, how does it work?

my 1981 280zx will start only with starting fluid, then runs great. It will not start cold and acts like it's not getting gas. I think it may be the thermo-time switch or the cold start valve, but need to know at what temperature does the thermo-time start triggering the cold start valve to pump gas in? I am trying to start the car at 70-80 degrees F and not starting. Is the engine even cold enough the cold start injector would be pumping gas in?

Cold start valve some times it will stay stuck shut... you might want to take it off and see if it will open or shut... clean it with carb cleaner. my x g.f. 83 was stuck shut i fixed hers for her...

first off. i have never run a cold start injector. and it's always started right up even at 5F degrees. your problem is somewhere else. i think timing is the issue. not well close enough to start it. but close enough to run it. or the problem could lye in your AFM.

i have a similar problem but instead of no fuel the thermotime is telling my cold start to dump fuel in drowning my car

on another note to check your thermotime switch you will need an ohms meter and the resistance at below 122 degree F should be infinite and at normal operating temp there should be none if i did my research correctly

I just did this test on my thermotime switch and cold start valve (you can remove the cold start valve, disconnect starter and battery, and manually hook up the valve to the battery to elicit it to squirt gas (into a clear container) - it's all in the FSM test section.

Good luck!
