Ok I need some help on what nissan trans' are interchangable. As in replacing the fifth gear. I know it can be done, but i need a taller 5th then the one i have now. The trans is the 82 280zx 5-speed. The fifth gear is .745 or so. just curious if anyon has attempted this or knows any taller 5th gears. Thanks for any help

 

I didn't think you could replace just the 5th gear. Aren't all the gears one piece inside the transmission?
They go from smaller to larger diameter but they are all made from one piece of metal in the center. Then your selector moves form one set to the other... anyway, I thought about this a long time ago and figured out (for myself anyway) that it can't be done.
Besides, as far as the L-series 5-speeds go, what you have is the absolute tallest 5th gear there is.

 

The way I did my swap was taking my tranny to the "best in phoenix" far a rebuild..After that you can do 75 at 3700 rpm.. Is that tall enough?? :dancing:

 

uuuhhh... the STOCK 1982 280ZX does 95mph at 3700 rpm. Is that what you meant?
I'm going 2900 rpm at 75. 3.9 Rear stock tire size.

 

No. 75@3700rpm.. I think what it is, and correct me if Z tranny's do not work this way, when I shift from 4th to 5th the slider?? does not go all the way to 5th gear and just sits somewhere in the tranny and makes a whstling noise... I change the 95W gear oil every week cause it also leaks out of the output shaft seal.. One day I will get a new tranny.. And my diff. is the stock LSD that came with it. :roflmao:

 

I think Bleach is right. I am no where close to 3700rpm @ 75mph. Sounds like you have some major issues with your tranny.

 

I do, very serious issues.. :roflmao: 1000.00 for a rebuild and a 6 month warranty, within 1 month it had to be rebuilt 3 more times, so they voided my warranty.. The lawsuit should settle soon... Then its all about the Z :bling:
