Starter too long

When I start my whip the starter keeps running a bit too long after the engine fires and it makes a horrible noise that annoys me. Any places I should check first to end this ear killing sound?

Could be a sticky ignition switch, or the teeth on the starter gear and/or flywheel are FUBARed. There are other possibilities, but I would start there.

Yeah replace the starter. Mine will get wet sometimes and I will go to start it and it will stall and the starter will continue to run. (stock starter too)
