The quick answer to your question, it's most likely the AFM or CHTS.

Just change the O2 sensor...$17...It is the #1 cause of poor fuel economy. Chances are it has never been changed and they are only good in the 280zx for 30,000 miles, so even if it has been changed it's probably ready for another one. This should be the first thing on the list for a major tune up as it is usually overlooked. Or, P.M. me and give me your address and I will send you mine. It is brand new and unused it is a Bosch #11027...it is yours if you promise to put it in.

, but I need the car since it's my DD so w/e. Now I just need to find my Chilton's and put it in.
ill be sure to do that tomorrow. but tonight (actually about 20 min ago) i was driving home and i decided to boost it a little and it rpm'd at about 4500 and the turbo let out a big whoosh and it now sounds like its running on straight headers. it is LOUD. just thought id see if anyone had any suggestions before i start taking it apart or take it to a mechanic. oh and also it doesnt sound like the turbo is spooling anymore...so im pretty sure im going to have to get a new one.
well does it still drive normal? if not turbo/wastegate blew (and floor it enter boost it will tell ou) other wise you blew a gasket or broke the exhaust. open the hood and look to see if there's any black soot build up on the head. if so, mightve blown the exhaust manifold. its not the end of the world. u guys and your jumping to conclusions mat. learn some things and stuff. lol
its still driving normal. i floored it and the boost guage went just about half way. no suit on head. bud it does kinda sound like its coming from the exhuast mani. im going to try to check the gaskets tonight. better put some coffee on for this one
the O2 sensor cost 35 becuase you bought the one with the wiring, you could save yourself half price if you bought a couple wire clamps from radioshack...for future reference.
also, you can use those 10 dollars to buy an oxygen sensor remover socket for your wrench and you'll save yourself a LONG time. it's the easiest thing to remove, if you need help PM me and i'll help you with it. I just did mine not 12 hours ago.

Yeah well you don't have to return it but just for future reference...
Okay here's the pictures
the first one is obvious, if you take a close look you can see a little orange tab, that is the connector part of the O2 sensor, the next picture is closer and the last picture is the actual sensor. If you go to pep-boys or kragen or the like (call first) buy an O2 sensor socket, here's what they look like http://www.usatoolsinc.com/index.asp...D&ProdID=17325 and torque it to about 30-35 ft/lb .

hope it works out!

That actually looks like it's slightly more of a pain to get at, as opposed to the O2 sensor being mounted to the turbo's down pipe which just seems to be a bit more accessible.
I remember when I got my Turbo Z, I was driving it and I gunned it, and this was when it was running like garbage at the time. Anyway I heard this huge pop, louder than any pop I had ever heard under the hood, after that the car was ridiculously loud, and seemed to have a ticking noise like a motorcycle, turned out it was all related to the exhaust manifold gasket. It took me a while to fix it, in the end it's not a hard thing to replace, just time consuming, and some of the bolts are not really easy to get at.

i think that thats probly what has happened to my car too. sounds like a motorcylce now and i showed someone who was a retired mechanic and he said i had a bad exhaust leak and he said i needed a new harmonic balancer? idk if that is coming off the turbo downpipes or if thats even what needs to be replaced? Thanks so much for the help everyone. its making my first car experience a good one

??? The harmonic balancer is in front of the motor under the fan!!! This is the main pulley that drives all the belts... I think you need to find a machanic that works on cars today not a 100 years LOL
yea thats what he said. idk he is pretty old. the sound is coming from the downpipes. im going to try and change the gasket out this weekend and see if that fixes the problem. is there anything besides the gasket on the downpipes that i should look at replacing?
How loud is it??? Sounds like the pipe has fallen off??? or a ticking sound??? By the way... your left rear tire is low so I think you need a headlight... LOL
If you drive hard for the a day or 2, it will be alot easier to find the leak...

You sould be able to see the leak (soot) with a mirror... look close to the head & the exhaust manifold... I'm not sure if this is like my 85 Nissan Z24 pickup, I found that most of the exhaust manifolds would get a crack on the back side... Good luck
