Running hot

So I searched and didn't have any luck, never really do... maybe im just searching impaired. But anyways my 280zxt seems to run really hot sometimes, like completely past 270 but on other days it will bearly heat up past the °f? Changed out the thermostat just the other day. And didnt help any. What could be the problem here?

#1: You are not running the right mix of coolant.
#2: You are not running the right thermostat.
and/or
#3: The radiator isn't cooling properly.

If #1 or #2, then fix.
To verify #3, use an infrared thermometer to check coolant temp at the thermostat housing, and again at the bottom radiator "out" hose. There should be a 25-30*F drop.

Seeing as they are $20 brand new, renting one would be a waste of time and $$$.

Harbor freight has them for ~$20, or if you can wait a week, you can get them for a few bones on ebay.

Alright thanks. And I read somewhere that if the timing is off that could also heat up the engine? Is that true?

Yeah, too advanced timing can cause it to run hot, but that's not likely the only problem. What is your timing set to right now?
