Rev problem on '82zx
I just inherited a ’82 zx from my father. It was running great when it was parked 2 years ago… Sure enough I stuck in the key and it started right up. The only problem seems to be when revving up the engine. When I rev the engine up it will shut off around 2800 rpm's and then restart when the rpm’s drop down below 2000. It’s almost like a rev limiter is set too low. I know the gas is old and it probably needs a fuel filter but the behavior is strange and I would not normally relate it to old gas… Unless it is starving for fuel above 2800 rpm’s. Any suggestions????
It probably is the gas. If it's been sitting for 2 years, drop the fuel tank and check it to see if it has rusted at all. The gas will most likely be varnish too so it'd be best to get rid of it and put fresh gas in there before it clogs up the fuel system.

That is a common problem that is usually associated with water in your throttle position switch. (or the switch could be bad) On the side of the throttle body, there is a small black box with a plug on top. Take the plug off and clean it with WD-40, and then let it dry. Plug it back in and you should be fine. I just ran into this problem this weekend after I washed a 280Z engine. Happens every time. It took a couple trys of cleaning and drying the plug before it worked properly.
