No more second gear

Went racing earlier tonight and blew out second gear. I think several of the teeth are gone. Does anyone know about how much it costs to get a rebuilt tranny or to have one rebuilt? Any help would be appreciatted.

Thanks

I think its your pilot bushing. Mine did the same thing from wear and tear. Once 1st went out too I stopped driving it. 3rd-5th work fine.

How much did it cost? Can I do it myself? Did your second gear go out all together, followed by first gear? Also was it grinding going into gear at mid-high rpm?

I can't afford to fix it right now! My Z-car is parked.

Yes, 2nd gear would grind a little going into gear at different rpms. If I went easy it wouldn't grind sometimes. This went on for many years and 80,000 miles. Then one day I noticed it would pop out of gear when I acclerated so I had to hold it in place. After a couple weeks it would "pop" out of mesh with the gears even though I was holding the shifter in place. So I started driving without using 2nd gear. After only a month the same thing happened to 1st gear all of a sudden so I stopped driving the car. I am going to replace my transmission, clutch, and throwout bearing all at once. No money though, so I'm driving my Datsun truck.

Hey, where does the pilot bushing go? Everyone i have asked has heard of it but never replaced. So they don't know where it goes.

It goes on the transmission input shaft, right in front of the clutch fork. It pushes on the clutch fingers once the transmission is installed.

i always thought the pilot bushing went into the recessed hole at the end of the crankshaft where the input shaft lines up with the flywheel and crankshaft.....

That is where I was thinking myself, also what i was a fraid of. I had to put a new crank in because I spun a bearing and didn't even think of it. Now that I am having problems I started thinking and i don't think there is one in there. Dropped car off at a friends tranny shop this morning. Will try to make it in there tommorrow to let him know about this. Any more info on this issue would be great.

Thanks,
FastZ

I used the wrong term. I meant to say that the throwout bearing might be going bad. The throwout bearing is what the clutch fork presses against, right?

I'm pretty sure it is, but I have not removed the transmission yet. I could hear a loud wobble sound from inside the transmission. That's usually that bearing. Its loud in neutral with the clutch engauged....
