Manual Transmission issue

Just picked up a 1982 ZX Non-Turbo 5-speed.
The guy I got it from says that the noise I hear is a throwout bearing.
I need the ZDriver expertise so I am sure.
In 1/2/3 gear it makes an AWFUL racket and I can feel the banging noise in the shifter. It makes the same noise in neutral but a lot quieter.
4th gear is as quiet and smooth as it can get, but 5th starts the racket again. When the clutch is pushed in...the noise is gone.
But the clutch and transmission are working ok....just making a god-awful racket.

On top of trying to identify this, how much does an average clutch/pp replacement cost? staying OEM. Not looking for high dollar aftermarket...just want it to work correctly.

Thank you

It's not the throw out bearing, it's one of the internal transmission bearings. If you were to drain the tranny oil, you'd probably find some big chunks of a bearing retainer.

Might be a countershaft bearing because u said the noise isnt as loud on 4th and if im not mistaken 4th is direct drive so theres no load on the countershaft but still spins so could be that bearing
Its Definetly not the throw out bearing because that only works when ur clutch pedal is pushed in and u said its quiet when u push it so ur problem gonna be the transmission itself

Yup sounds like the front bearing in the bellhousing. Good news is it's the easiest to get to...

My 87 4runner just went through these same symptoms - exactly the same! I drove it in 4th as much as I could because that was the 1:1 ratio and it didn't make that awful noise so I thought it was good for the tranny....but within a couple hundred miles it started popping out of 4th when I let off the gas, which I think means syncros are toast.

It's a bebuilt W56 (great tranny from Toyota) with 20,000 miles on it and out of the 1 year warranty that came with it. The shop who installed it is since out of business...perfect.

I have a used tranny in my garage and a new clutch waiting to go in within a month or so (the Z is taking up all the garage space now).

I think mine is a combination of the clutch and the tranny bearings...the symptoms progressed and changed over about 400 miles - when I downshift to 1st or 2nd on a right turn, I can feel gears grinding or something through my foot on the clutch as I re-engage it...sounds/feels terrible....I had been driving a time bomb.

For those tranny experts out there...is replacing a bad bearing easy? Seems to me you need to get into the tranny to do that, and I'm not really planning on doing that!

GL bud!
