Installing piston, piston ring scoured cylinder wall

Simply put, I was installing the new pistons, which have new rings, which were installed correctly, and I have this **** going on:

IMAG0035.jpg?t=1347225966

It's mainly a mark, it barely has any feel to it, I can slightly catch my fingernail in it, but it's, still there.

Suggestions? Just go get a cylinder hone and go over it a few times?

Super Duper pissed right now, been waiting three years to start putting this motor back together, and now it goes and gets screwed up.

Also, anyone know why it would have pulled this ****?

Check it with a bore gauge and if need be run the dingleball through it until you can't feel it.

So are the the rings or piston scratching? Is this the only cylinder w/ the problem?

Dis guy?
Those work too, but I was thinking this:

They sell different grit pads too.

I don't think you had the ring compressor down all the way.

^^^ Yup, the 3 pad / arm one is what I use. 20 seconds forward, 20 seconds backward should do it... and make sure you use WD-40!

And that fine scraped edge does look like it would be made from a ring seated improperly.

Did you use motor oil or WD-40 on the cylinder walls for the install?

It has to be the rings, and it is the only cylinder with the issue, I even doublechecked the clearance on the rings

I had the pistons sitting in oil before I installed them, and I rubbed oil on the cylinder walls as well

So how do the rings look on that piston? Did you align the gaps as per the FSM?

They look fine, and they were aligned, and the gaps were all within spec

I honed it, with the assist of WD40, and this is where I'm at:

Most of the marking is gone, but the scratch itself is still there, I can still just barely catch my finger in it, so it's still there I haven't honed it for very long, short periods of 10 seconds and then I spray more WD40, a total of about 40 seconds

^^^ Did you run the hone forwards and backwards? I don't see any cross hatching...

I did, it's minimal though

I took the block back to the guy who originally did the bore and told him the retarded things that go on in my garage

He said he'll see what he can come within specs, I'm going to bring him the block, the specific piston and the rings

fingers crossed

Cylinders are okay, no need for another overbore or sleeves

Sigh of relief

Good to hear, I'm sure you have been stressing over that scratch for the past few days so its good to get that news. Good luck on getting her back together and running.

you did use some kind of lubricant when installing the pistons right? not calling you stupid. just going over basics. and also did you make sure there wasn't any carbon or dirt in the ring lands keeping the rings from seating all the way back?

100%

Pistons were sitting in oil before installation, rings were lubed, and I lubed the cylinder walls as well
