High Performance Coil???

Hello All,

Let me start by saying that I have searched the forums for discussions about performance coils for N/A 280zx's (mine is an '83) and I apologize if I missed my question which follows. It seems some of you have recommended MSD Blaster Coils. Is there any concern with overloading the ignition system if one of these coils is put in place? I have a new coil, but it is the stock variety and my engine is stock as well. I assume the engine response will be elevated if a hotter coil is installed due to increased voltage. Do you guys know any part numbers I might look for and if this upgrade is advisable?

Thanks,

Adding JUST a high performance coil, won't make any noticeable difference. And no, it won't "overload" the ignition system.... all it does, is send a more powerful spark to the plug... which allows you to gap your plugs greater, which makes a bigger spark... which makes a better combustion. Get it?

Hotter coils make a difference when you're using a very high compression NA motor or using some kind of power adder that can actually "blow out" the spark.

Nitrous, turbo, supercharger's can take advantage of a hotter spark. Stock motors will notice nothing.

The one thing that might help and NA motor is a Multi-Spark ignition system from either Crane or MSD. Although the advantage will be minimal and typically only under 3000 rpm where the "multi" part of the name comes from. Again, this "advantage" will only be significant if some other part of the air/fuel/ignition system is running poorly, a multi-spark ignition can cover it up by making the motor run more smoothly than it would otherwise.
