gears grinding =0\

well i've been having a problem with my car. I recently started grinding gears a while back so i decided to check it out and i figured it was either the slave or master cylinder that was messing up so i went on and replaced both. Some how i still have the same problem but the weird thing is i grind gears only when the engine is in the hot heat and when it's cold persay the morning i have no problems with the gears any suggestions on what's going on? thanks for the time fellas.

When the transmission fluid is cold, it is thicker and resists the grinding. The problem is your syncros going out inside the transmission. It'll get worse and worse and then one day it won't stay in gear.... but I got another 70K miles out of mine before that happened.

you can slow down the process by cheanging your gear oiul but it will eventually go out on you.. remember thease cars have 20 year old transmissions in them... you might wanna try changing your oil to synthetic...

yeah mine was grinding bad too....whenever i would shift fast it would grind...but when i changed the clutch n pressure plate and bearing slave and master cyl. and put new oil in im not sure it probably was synthetic....it runs way smoother now...i know my synchroes are still worn out but it doesnt grind anymore even when i drive hard....

I'm having a similar problem except it grinds (mostly 2nd gear) when the car is still cold then after I drive it awhile it seems to shift smooth. Any ideas?

Just out of curiousity, which of the suggested changes made the grinding go away?

Clutch n pressure plate? Bearing? Slave and Master cyl.? New oil? Change to Synthetic?

Its probably the same thing. Syncros going out. 2nd gear is commonly the first gear to go. As far as shifint smoothly once warmed up; I'm not sure why.

Change your transmission oil every 30,000 miles and shift slow... and start saving for a rebuild.

i wouldnt recommend it if you dont know transmissions real well.... cuz the slightest mistake and your screwed....im not sure all the processes involved, im just know like gear replacements, bearings and small pieces and various parts and refinishing of others...

i would get it done professionally...that would be my advice

Anyone know how much it would cost to rebuild or replace the transmission?

I'm new to driving a stick & found out that I had to "double-clutch" to shift gears sometimes especially downshifting...really annoying..but most people say they just bear with it until forced it gives out.

I'm talkin' about the cost of a top notch job... or new parts...not sourcing junkyard parts....cause I need everything to work perfectly & I don't like taking chances.

I paid $375 for a low-mile Borg Warner T5. 66,000 miles

I've heard rebuilds for the Nissan transmission are $200-500.

I can walk into the tranny shop in Hayward and pick up a freshly rebuilt B/W T5 for $600. I drop off my old one and walk out the door.

That was for the tranny R&R rebuild and new clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. We are talking about Casper Wyoming. Not Hayward Cali. In Wyoming there might be 100 Z,s in the entire state. In Cali it is a hell of a lot higher and easier to get parts. I had to wait 3 days to have parts delivered out of MSA.
