Fuel Pump Issue

Okay, here is the back story.

82zxt coupe 5 speed 196k

I bought the car and it would not start. I would crank it and the starter would try work, so I check the battery cables and found this:

The two wires that the casing is melted are the injector fan and maybe the oil temp sensor?? I tried to find the injector fan in FSM to confirm, but to no avail. Is it called something else? Plastic Turbo came up with no results too.

I replaced the battery cables, charged the battery, and replace the starter. After I did that, the starter worked, but it would not turnover. I notice I did not hear the fuel pump kick on when the key was in the on position. I pulled up the FSM and started to see if the how the fuel pump was connected. I check the fusible links and they are kind of confusing, but none seemed burnt. Can you tell me if I labeled them correctly?:

What is the one labeled Awesome Source for?

My questions:

Is there a fuel pump fuse (didn't see one in the FSM) or any other electrical component I need to check before replacing the fuel pump? It is not a big deal if I have to replace the fuel pump, my parts car has a new one.

Would the short that fried the battery cable and the starter cause problems somewhere else? If so, where?

Thanks!!

The turbo model uses a "fuel pump control module" to control fuel pump, along with the fuel pump relay which receives signal from the ecu. Is your ecu getting power?

The injector cooler is called "Auxiliary Cooling Fan" located in FSM section EF & EC

So I did a little more digging and forum searching and came across a post where some one said that the fusible link connectors could look okay, but actually be burnt. I went back and rechecked them a little more closely and this is what I found:

I wanted to check to see if the fuel pump was getting power, so I twisted them together and used a volt meter to make sure that power was still flowing. I checked the fuel pump with the key in the on position and in the off position. These are the connectors (red circles) I use to check, it did not show that it had power.

Even if the fuel pump is bad, shouldn't it still show power going to those connectors? I am going to take the fusible link box out of my parts car and install it in this one.

Marc, I did not check to see if the ECU is getting power. After I replace the fusible link box I will tomorrow.

I just bought a 79 280zx 2+2, it will start and I can drive it just fine however after I turn it off, it will not start right back up until it sits for 15-20 minutes. Any suggestions? does it mean the fuel pump is going out? fuel filter? help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to ZDriver!

Check fuel pressure and spark at each plug.

Update. A little late, but here it is.

It was the ECU the whole time! I replaced it with the one from my parts car and she runs like a champ. However, about four days ago, she started to sputter and would backfire at ~2500 rpms. I did some searching and found multiple posts about this issue. Everyone was saying that the problem was the connections to the ECU. I cleaned the ECU pins and everything is working great now.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Weak fuel pressure.(Weak fuel pump)...yours seems like after market one and use it for N/A ZX's....you should get a walbro fuel pump or try to find a known good factory turbo fuel pump.N/A fuel pumps are different!!
