Flywheel question...
Flywheel question...
Are the flywheels the same for NA 5 speeds and turbo 5 speeds? I fond a 17.5 pound flywheel from a Maxima. The guy says it will fit the Z and ZX cars. Before I get it I just want to be sure it will work on my turbo 5 speed.
Thanks!

The Maxima uses the smaller flywheel contact patch and clutch. 225mm
the ZX 2+2 and turbo use the 240mm flywheel and pressure plate and stronger clutch fingers.
I don't think you want to use the Maxima flywheel. They came on an L24. Maybe if you resurface it then your clutch will do fine. I'm not sure.

My bad he is right. I knew they were different sizes. Just could not remember what they were. If you order a clutch or pressure plate find out which flywheel you have. These are different between the 2.

Wouldn't have any idea what's wrong with your clutch and/or tranny unless I could drive it to diagnose. I just wanted to comment that some people seem to be making a big deal out of replacing the pilot bearing/bushing, which is part of any standard 5-piece clutch set and any normal clutch job. As is the throwout bearing, which is even easier. I would figure no more than 2 hours labor for the clutch, and 4 or 4.5 for the clutch/tranny combo. I really don't know, never having had to do a clutch or tranny on a zcar, but I can't imagine it being much different than any other FR car.

I know this is an old thread but I just want to clarify. The 280ZX 2+2 and 280ZX turbo flywheels are the same size right? Also, im pretty sure this isn't a problem but the larger flywheel will bolt into the smaller flywheel location without any problems, correct? I'm considering buying a lightened flywheel from Victoria British and I need to make sure the turbo flywheel will work on my 2+2. Thanks a lot guys.
The flywheels are the same size overall. The contact surface area is either 225mm or 240mm wide. (circle)
A 225mm flywheel from a NA car will bolt onto a 2+2 or turbo, or 2+2 turbo. You will just have a slightly weaker clutch.
The turbo flywheel itself weighs more. I've never heard of a lightened turbo flywheel. If it is lightened, it probably started as a 225mm contact flywheel.
Just make sure your clutch kit you put on matches the contact width. That's the only thing to worry about. eBay has 240mm clutch kits all over the place. The 225mm kit you have to buy from a store.

Actually I only know of one place that makes them for anything other than the Turbo 280ZX (or 2+2). All the other flywheels are the 240mm version. Here are some ebay links if anybody is interested in buying a lightened flywheel.
