exhaust- starting from scratch. Personal opinions?

Hello everyone at zdriver! okay this if my first post on this forum, its nice to find one where people actually work on their cars instead of just bragging and talking about how much they love their Z.

I have searched around a little and didnt find anything specific enough.
While i do have a few bigger things I have to fix before i should be worrying about exhaust, it has now become a necessity. I cut the cat out and welded in a straight pipe a few weeks ago, that was okay but it sounded a little leaky. i assumed my sub-pro welding skills were to blame. not the case. It blew off about 2 inches past the manifold on wednesday and sounds like hell, not to mention the fact i go deaf every time i drive it and everybody STARES at the broke guy in his busted Z in friggin rich shoreline Connecticut haha. so now i have nothing there at all and i'm going to the exhaust shop where i know a guy and i can get a good deal.

I'm thinking 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 straight back into a magnaflow or some other straight through muffler (but please not a fart can). I dont know if the 3/4 will be too big or not, never had a straight 6 before. Also i was wondering if that would be too raspy, i want it to be a little throaty at low rpms and to coo at a higher rpm. Should i put a glasspack or a resonator or something along those lines where the cat used to be? any opinion on brands or sizes are great i have a little to spend but don't want to break the bank, i wasn't planning on doing this just yet.

Oh and i forgot to mention i have mostly a stock 1981 2.8L, its n/a, i made myself a cold air intake and i got rid of the emissions parts. Anyone have a good setup on a similar car?

Welcome to ZDriver!

Go 2.5" w/ Magnaflow or Flowmaster... that will sound very good. Lots of exhaust clips on youtube.

I doubt seriously you'd see much benefit from 2.75, around here we have to fabricate 2.75, our bender only goes to 2.5. Last time somebody went to the trouble, I promptly blew their doors off.(hey, they volunteered!

If it makes ya feel any better, my old datsun pickup did the same thing once, at the time I was making a speed run. I slowed down to about 90, figured out what it was, and went back to it. Not that much difference at speed.
Eugene to Portland, 120 miles, 60 minutes flat, 70 datsun pickup, 1976.
