can i request a tech

Can we request that someone write up or point me in the right direction for how to change the clutch out on an 81 280zx.

I took it to a mechanic and he told me it would cost 400 dollars + parts. No way I'm paying that for them to do it.

Exclamation **Clutch problem**

if u have no idea how to change the clutch on you car then theres no way someone can tell you or walk you thru the process online..wat you need is a repair/shop manual thier fairly cheap around 60-80 dollars and come with visuals and step by step guidance if your interested heres the link. books4cars.com the repair/shop manual is very extensive and covers your whole car.

I have the hanes manual, but I can never read those things.

I meant a picture walk through on a 280 that is basically stock, that would tell me what I am getting myself into.

Wow, 70 dollars??? I would think someone has done this and taken pictures, lets just post a walkthrough on it.

Actually the haynes manual is not as extensive and is pritty cheap and if u wanna learn how to change your brakes then its the right manual for you...otherwise i would go with the offical datsun 280zx repair that was used by the dealer to service the vehicle...if your gunna spend the money spend it one time and be done with it....dont dinker around with haynes and chiltons manuals and websites with a bunch of kids who jus wanna post pictures of their cars.

LOL ya I have the Haynes already, where can I get the official dealer manual?

I actually really like it when people show what they do to their cars. Like the underbody refirb, that was just awesome. I plan to do that sometime.

Books4cars.com they have everything.......check it out youll be amazed...and yah i also enjoy the pictures if there worth looking at.....but some of these people like this 16 year old kid jus posts pics of his white 280zx which is in horrible cond. the engine looks haywire and the paint job i shotty i dont wanna see abused Z cars.

LOL well I threw it out there, so if someone is planning to change their clutch, take pictures, and post it for all of us.

Also, I don't know that the mechanic was right anyway. It works fine if I "pump" the clutch....I'm not sure whats going on

The Haynes manual has a great write up on clutch replacement. You can download a copy of the FSM from www.xenons130.com

In a nut shell:
-Drop the exhaust
-Drop the driveline
-Remove all tranny bolts
-Remove clutch slave cyl
-Remove tranny cross mount
-Remove shifter handle
-Drop out tranny
-Unbolt clutch
-Bolt on new clutch
-Install everything opposite of removal

if it works when it's pumped, it's probably hydrolic no? sounds like you need a new cylinder to me. unless it's also slipping.

you forgot to mention that you absolutly need to get the flywheel machined for proper new clutch break in and long life of the clutch.

If you have access to it alldata pro on the internet is really good too. If I remember correctly it only goes to 82 though.

I will try that clutch bleeding thing, It seems way easier than doing the clutch. I have a small electric problem that got top of my list, but alternator should be easy enough. (Voltage regulator giving out 15V, generous thing.) It does grind into gear and out of gear. Could that still be air? Oh and one other thing on that clutch, it is only 6 inches off the floor back, so it isn't near as high up as it should be. Thanks for the great tips thus far.

the grinding could still be air, its not engaging the clutch properly due to the fact it cant make pressure with air. 15v isnt all that bad, have you tried actually testing with a multimeter to make sure the guage is accurate? my guage was 2 volts out!! autometer time

Actually my first thought was that the gauge was wrong, so I gave it a couple days to "fix" its self. In that time the car needed jumped, and I got some crazy radio issues, (like flashing while the car was off) and so I took it to Autozone, and they tested it at 15 volts. They said the battery was bad also, probably from being massively overcharged for god only knows how long.

I am going to replace the alternator, (I will try to take pictures), and try to figure out how to bleed the clutch system and see if that helps. It is tough to get into gear sometimes, but usually only grinds in reverse, that could be incompetence on my part though.
