the towers that your cam gose through, on the inline heads, dose it matter if you put them in a slitely diferant order? I have looked through my manule and it dosn't cover them, so if any of you know (Bleech) could you divolge of that info.

I have the cam oiler still atatched to like two or three of the towers so I know wher they go.

 

From what Ive seen in my manual, the cam bores are align honed on the head, so if they go on out of order you will need to have them align honed again.

well, I don't know for sure on the order.
I do know just getting them re-aligned after removing them is the big problem.

Since it is already done, just install them loose. Stick the cam in there with no rockers... well oiled. Tighten the bolts a little. Turn the cam by hand, knock the towers a little as required to get the cam turning as freely as possible. Gently torque each bolt little by little. When its all done the cam should still turn by hand with minimal resistance. That's as good as you can do at home.

They're numbered or marked aren't they? I'd agree w/ jmmorriso... unless it's a new cam & towers... the bearings & cam need to be matched back up correctly, or it could wear uneven.

 

I Did What Bleach Said. Put Them In With No Rockers And Tighten While Rotating. 15000 Miles Complete With Many Runs Up To 8000 Rpm And Ive Done It On Several Cars. That Being Said If You Can Leave Them In Or Number Them It Is Best.

 

well I have already rmoved them, but I had thoght about bleech's technique. I am going to put them on and put a straight edge in there and check with filler gauges. It is a performance stage 3 cam kit going in and I want it to last as long as it can.

 

It's just a trial and error thing. If they line up out of order then they do. If they dont then they don't. If anything inside your engine is ever not marked as to it's order, then be sure to do it yourself. Dont rely on trays or lying them out in order. They could get dropped or something and then you're screwed. Follow Bleach's directions and as long as they're close they should work out just fine. Unless the towers have been off before and the their bases machined, then there's no reason why they couldn't be put in out of order. Just keep trying to align them until the cam doesn't seize. It can take a while sometimes to get them all aligned right. Thats the same procedure for putting them back in the right order even, so it's no picnic getting them back on there aligned correctly. Just don't expect to torque them all down and have everything be alright.

It's going to need shims if it was. And if it needs shims then it's probably going to need to be align honed (or atleast checked to see if it does).

 

sorry guys but no shaving here. I keep my stuff in good shape as far as over heating gose. I just pulled a stupid on pulling the damn towers out. the cam I pulled out of it looked great.
