Auxiliary fan

Just bought a 1983 280zx coupe non turbo and noticed an empty bracket on passenger side of motor upon further investigation this is apparently a bracket for an auxiliary fan that has a black airduct that goes over valve cover what is this for? and is it needed?

Only if you live in the desert and your coolant temp gets above 221*F.
